A trader profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been seized.

A single trader, which registered on the site recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.

A small number of other individuals also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule introduced on Monday would prevent federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to political events.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
