2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Challenged Hero Shooter Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Response
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a clearer game identity.
The president stated that the team is now reimagining the project with a revised vision, aiming to better meet player expectations.
Trend of Key Recruitment
The news follows a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s the game playtest was enlightening. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to consideration and revamped the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our players.
The trust in this project strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of the team. After some time of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter space is vast, having devoted the last 15 years creating and managing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all eager to keep seeing the progress of the game in the months to follow.
David

Game Details and Concept
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year alongside a early access event. Initially, the developers presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary reads. "Take on the competition with unique powers, challenges, and challenges that evolve every round. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, risk it all, and trust your team can achieve the highest spot? The option is up to you."
The game has not yet received an official launch window or supported systems, but enthusiasts can expect further news as development advances.
